Weissbruck Canal
Three days of fun

Location: Weissbruck Canal

We enter the Weissbruck canal (toll: 5 GC) early in the morning. A group of Road Wardens is following along the tow-path from Altdorf. They get some information at the lock house and then plod along. The chief tells us that they are on the look out for some bandits, because two artisans and a young noble were killed in Altdorf last night. Werner and Malmir stayed below deck the whole time during this conversation :-).

My Dear Herr Kuftsos,
You may recall a certain conversation we had last Brauzeit in the public bar of The Hook & Hatchett in Nuln. At the time you mentioned your interest in the activities of a certain society whose name I shall not mention here. In particular you were very anxious to trace the whereabouts of a certain officer, known only as the Magister Impedimente.
I am now able to confirm each and every one of your suspicions. After your departure I made some discrete inquiries and managed to ascertain that the “gentleman” you are looking for uses the name Kastor Lieberung. In accordance with your plan, Herr Lieberung will be travelling towards Altdorf along the Middenheim Road some time towards the end of the month of Jahrdrung. I also have been fortunate enough to secure a likeness of Herr Lieberung, which I enclose with this letter.
I remain, Sir, your most obedient servant.

Altdorf
The city that never sleeps

Location: Königplatz, Altdorf
Date: 26 Jahrdrung 2512

The coach finally reaches its destination, the Königplatz. It’s probably everybody’s first time in our capital. I know it is mine. Delberz has about 2,000 people living in the city, but Altdorf has over 15,000 residents. I have to get used to the noise. There’s so much going on. Two pedlars start making strange signs in front of Werner. They only stop when a tough looking man attracts their attention.

Johann is delighted to see an old friend, Joseph Quartjin. The bearded fellow is the kind of man that enjoys drinking as much as possible whenever possible. He invites us into a riverside tavern and buys us all a bottle of wine. I must be becoming a different person already, as a few weeks ago I would have thought very negatively about alcoholics like Joseph. Now I am realising that he works hard to make a living and needs to let off steam sometimes, especially on the odd occassion that he meets old friends. He has a river barge called the Berebeli, that he uses to transport and sell commodities across the Empire. He has seen all the mayor riverside cities.
Joseph tells us he is heading for Bögenhafen to get a good price for a shipment of Reikland wine. He expects a good price because of the Schaffenfest, the local fair and livestock market.SoB_Schaffenfest_Pamphlet_oktober_2012_642.jpg
He invites us to sleep at the Berebeli so we don’t have to go search for an inn. There we will meet Wolmar and Gilda (and their baby Elsa). They have worked for Joseph for two years and they get along very well with him. Their loyalty probably stems from the fact that Joseph fished them out of the water two years ago when their boat sank. Joseph feels like a grandpa to Elsa. But since he needs some extra crew to help him handle the boat, he offers four of us 10/- a day to help him get to the Schaffenfest in time, and the others can tag along for free. We will be leaving in the morning.
We found out later that night that Altdorf was not entirely a bed of roses. As we were enjoying our drinks, first some local asshole came in. He obviously has a reputation because we could see people move away from where he sat down. It all became a little ugly when some young nobles came in later that night. They were accompanied by four bodyguards and were trying to pick a fight. We got really close to actually fighting them and then this asshole Max started to taunt us. In the end we didn’t think fighting would be a very smart option, so we let it go. We went to the Berebeli to get a good night’s rest and dream about all the impressions our capital made on this first visit.

On our way to the Berebeli, we were being followed by at least two men. We didn’t feel very comfortable about it but we just kept on walking. They looked like the pedlars that made those strange signs to Werner at the Königplatz when we arrived. Suddenly they slump down. When we check they both have a crossbow bolt in their back. They are quite dead! Instead of pleasant dreams I had a nightmare about being shot in the back :-(

The next morning, when we were about to cast off, we overheard people talking to a council guy that was putting up pamphlets. We understood that one of the young nobles got killed last night and that, judging from the description, Werner and Malmir were wanted for questioning. We thought it would be better if we just started on our way to Bögenhafen. Joseph agreed.

Mistaken Identity
What happened before

Three players, six characters.
The Baron playing Johann (boatman) and Malmir (minstrel), D’Artagnan playing Harbull (herbalist) and Werner (bodyguard) and Shorty playing Wanda (wizard’s apprentice) and Kirsten (thief, general).

Location: Coach & Horses Inn (along a minor road from Delberz to Altdorf)
Time: Evening of Festag, 24th Jahrdrung in the year 2512
Author: Wanda Weltschmerz

The courtyard of the inn is bustling with activity as Kirsten and I arrive. The sweet smell of fresh manure is heavy in the air and a couple of grooms can be seen outside the stables busily rubbing down a team of four horses. From the inn itself comes the delicious smell of cooking and the sound of merry laughter.

Landlord Gustav welcomes us as soon as we get inside. The inn is so busy that Gustav puts the last six people that entered all at one table. Introductions are in order and we soon find out the thing we have in common: Johann, Malmir, Harbull, Werner, Kirsten and I all want to become adventurers. The cheerful Harbull points at a pamphlet hanging in the inn which says: Wanted_Bold_Adventurers.jpg

WANTED! Bold Adventurers. It expresses the wish of the Crown Prince Hergard von Tasseninck to hire skilled adventurers to go on a perilous mission into the Grey Mountains. The party will leave asap from Altdorf where the Crown Prince is currently residing.
To Altdorf it is then. There is a coach leaving tomorrow morning. So let’s enjoy the evening and get up in time!

Ratchett_Lines.jpg
Not only did us six enjoy our evening but so did the two coachmen, Gunnar and Hultz. We think they weren’t even hung over, they were just still drunk. The coach didn’t leave at the scheduled time. Did we care? Not so much. What was more annoying was that snob of a Lady Isolde. She wouldn’t allow us commoners inside the coach. Only her retinue and that absent-minded Physician’s Student, on his way to continue his studies at Altdorf University, were allowed near her. We are supposed to travel on the roof?! I guess it is part of becoming an adventurer.

After a few hours on our way to Altdorf we see something strange. A coachman is lying on his back on the road with a figure crouching over him. When the figure hears our coach approaching he turns and I see Kirsten wince. She says it is her old friend Rolf Hurtsis, who started to develop a skin complaint that made him very recognisable. Last thing she heard of him was that he escaped from prison some six months ago. When he turned around the horrible affliction was very easy to see, but what made everyone jump was the fact there seemed to be a human hand between his teeth. rolf.png
He attacked us in a rage and we killed him. The coachman was already dead, but we wondered how he got there.

Around the bend in the road in this forrested area we found the answer to our question; mutants were slaughtering the passengers of an overturned Four Seasons coach. They weren’t expecting any visitors so, with the help of the element of surprise, we did away with them surprisingly quickly. I hope this run of luck keeps continuing, because I really don’t feel that powerful myself. We started looking for the horses that had broken free and run off. And then our adventuring days really got underway; we found an entrance to what turned out to be a goblin lair.
Sob_dungeon_entrance_oktober_2012_579.jpg

When I started thinking about becoming an adventurer I envisioned solving mysteries and maybe fighting a human or two. This lair gave me just a little more. Not only were we attacked by goblins with spears, nets and clubs but also by squigs, the hopping balls with razorsharp teeth that these goblins kept as pets. And to top it all off we saw what must have been a Fimir. It escaped so we couldn’t examine it like we did with the goblins and squigs, but from what I have read in the books of Hieronymous, this must have been one of those legendary creatures that many people deny exist. I was just thankful we all got out in one piece and with some loot to boot

Back at the scene of the overturned coach we found the slaughtered passengers. One of them looked like the twin brother of Werner. He told us he doesn’t have a twin brother. It made Kirsten curious enough though to look through the victim’s belongings. He carried some letters about him being the sole heir of a large sum of money. To be collected in Bögenhafen.
